Concrete Cutting in Coldblow

Coldblow is the small settlement between Bexley village and the Dartford boundary, at the point where Greater London stops looking like London. It is on our doorstep: from the yard at Little Westerhill Farm it is a straightforward run up the A20, which makes it one of the easier parts of London for us to reach at short notice.

Coldblow's significance to a cutting contractor is its position between two trunk routes. The A2 and the A20 both carry Channel-bound traffic out of London and into Kent, and both are maintained on a rolling programme of night closures. Highway cutting here is the familiar pattern: saw cutting for joint reforming and slab replacement, coring for investigation and for gantry and sign fixings, all delivered inside the closure and handed back before the morning peak.

Because the same corridor continues into Kent, the work often does not stop at the boundary. A programme that starts at Coldblow can run east on the same specification and the same traffic management approach, which is one reason we treat this part of London as an extension of our Kent work rather than as a separate region.

Away from the trunk roads, Coldblow and the surrounding Bexley suburbs are inter-war and post-war housing with pockets of light industrial and retail. That produces ground bearing slabs, garage and forecourt hardstanding, and drainage alterations rather than structural work. It is straightforward cutting, and the constraints are access and hours rather than the material.

It is easy to forget, this far out, that Coldblow is inside Greater London and inside the plant emissions regime. Every diesel saw, generator and compressor we bring into Greater London has to meet Stage IV of the Non-Road Mobile Machinery standard, which became the London-wide minimum on 1 January 2025, and every machine has to be listed on the NRMM register for the site before it turns a blade. Borough enforcement officers do check on site. It is worth asking any contractor quoting for London work to confirm both, because a machine that fails the check is a machine that goes home.

The wider picture matters here too. The Dartford Crossing is a few minutes away and the Lower Thames Crossing is now in construction to the east, which over the next several years means sustained highway and structures work across the Bexley and Dartford boundary. Coldblow sits directly on that corridor, and work of that kind tends to arrive as a programme rather than a single job.
