MMA Line Marking

MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) is an emerging alternative to thermoplastic road marking, increasingly specified by contractors and local authorities. It is a two-part chemical compound: the two parts are mixed at the point of application, it sets hard and lasts approximately 10 years. Compared to thermoplastic, MMA has a lower carbon footprint as it does not require the same level of heat during application.

MMA cures by chemical reaction rather than by cooling, so it is trafficable within roughly 15 to 30 minutes and can be laid down to around 0°C. Thermoplastic needs a dry surface and a rising temperature, which rules out much of the UK winter. That makes MMA the material for a car park or junction with one overnight closure in December, and for coloured cycle and bus lanes that need to hold their colour.

Two things are worth planning for. Once mixed it has a short pot life, often around ten minutes, so it needs proper metering equipment and a practised crew. And it has a strong smell until it cures, which is rarely an issue on an open road but needs flagging near homes, hospital windows or in an enclosed car park.
