Hand Applied (Vertical Faces) A cold applied sealant specifically designed for vertical surfaces: sea walls, bridge stems, wall faces, and expansion joints on structures. At Shepherd and Sons, our primary hand-applied product is Fosroc Thioflex 600, a gun-grade, two-part polysulphide sealant engineered for vertical and overhead joints where pourable systems can’t be used. Applied by hand or gun, it delivers the same proven cold-applied chemistry our teams use across horizontal pavement work, adapted for vertical application.

A pouring grade sealant levels itself, which is what a floor joint needs and the opposite of what a wall needs. On a sea wall, a bridge stem or an upstand the sealant has to stay where it is put, so we use the gun grade of Thioflex 600, which is mixed in the tin and applied by gun or by hand.

On the Lyminster bridge it went into the expansion joints, while the surface joints in the carriageway took a hot applied N1. The two joints do different jobs, so they take different sealants.

Like any movement joint, it is designed at about twice as wide as it is deep, primed where the data sheet calls for it, and bonded to two faces only, with a backer rod setting the depth. More on the product is in what is Thioflex 600?
