An inset light sits in a base, or pit, set flush into the pavement and wired back through ducting to the circuit, so installing or replacing one starts with cutting concrete. We core around the pit at large diameter rather than breaking it out, because a percussive break-out cracks the slab beyond the line and turns a fitting change into a bay repair. A clean core leaves a square shoulder for the new base to be grouted into.

Shallow bases sit within the surface course and deep bases need a deeper core. Either way the base has to finish flush and level, because a fitting set proud is a trip and debris hazard. On airfield concrete we use bolt-down coring rigs, which hold where a vacuum seal would creep on a grooved finish. At Stansted that means a programme of 150 seating pots cored inside overnight possessions.

We are based at Little Westerhill Farm near Maidstone in Kent and install, core and maintain airfield ground lighting at UK airports. AGL work is out of hours by definition: the pits, ducting and cable chases sit in the runway and taxiway surface, so the work happens inside the closure and the pavement is handed back serviceable before the first movement. We cover Kent, London, Sussex and Essex directly from the yard, and mobilise nationally for longer programmes.
