DIAMOND DRILLING & CORING
Diamond drilling involves the use of an electric or hydraulic rotary drill motor mounted on a drill rig, equipped with a diamond-tipped core bit to cut through reinforced concrete and other hard construction materials. Our rigs can drill vertical, horizontal, and angled cores and come equipped for any situation of working, bringing our own water source, power, and scaffolding towers so that we can core in the most isolated of areas.
EXAMPLES OF USE
- Plumbing Pipelines
- Electrical Routes
- Demolition
- Stitch Drilling
- Bollard Installation
- AGLs
- Drainage Channels
- Structural Testing
Diamond drilling contractors in Kent and across the UK
We are based at Little Westerhill Farm near Maidstone in Kent and drill and core on airfields, highways, ports and industrial sites nationwide. We bring our own water, power and access, which is what makes short notice work possible on sites that have none of the three. Day to day that means Kent, London, Sussex and Essex, with national mobilisation for extended programmes.
For the regional picture, see diamond drilling contractors in Kent and diamond drilling in Essex.
Coring is the technique within diamond drilling that most of our work uses, and it has a page of its own: core drilling.
For short notice and out of hours callout, see emergency and out of hours cutting.
Diamond Drilling
Shepherd & Son’s work closely with contractors to core the desired channels that they need. Drilling techniques typically employ water flushing, creating a concrete slurry that can be vacuumed and contained, leaving little to no mess! The drilling process is fast, and precise, generating minimal dust and virtually no vibration, ensuring a smooth operation for both the operative and the structure.
Specialised coring sizes can be arranged with a variety of depths, so contact us for any specific questions on your diamond drilling needs.

Diamond Drilling Video - stansted airport
We core precise openings and channels straight through live airfield slabs, as we did on a recent apron at Stansted. Water flushing captures the spoil as a slurry we vacuum and contain, leaving little to no mess, with minimal dust and virtually no vibration. In our experience, diamond coring works far better than percussive breaking on a live apron because it protects the fuel mains, drainage and lighting buried beneath the slab.
