Concrete Cutting Contractors in Essex
We cut concrete across Essex from our yard at Little Westerhill Farm near Maidstone, reached over the Dartford Crossing. Most of the county's cutting work sits in three places: Stansted, the terminals on the Thames estuary, and the road network running north and east from the M25.
Stansted terminal extension
At London Stansted we worked alongside Marriott Civils on a terminal building extension. Jordan Shepherd cut a series of deep channels, pits and trenches to a depth of 300mm, ready for excavation, using a Husqvarna FS 7000 D floor saw and Diaquip blades. The project write-up has the detail.
Airfield ground lighting at Stansted
With Lagan Aviation and Infrastructure we are part of a ten-week programme to reinstate the airport's ground lighting, coring 150 seating pots inside restricted overnight possessions in a live operational environment. Each pit is cored rather than broken out, so the surrounding slab stays sound and the pavement goes back serviceable before the first movement. See the AGL coring project and airfield ground lighting.
The estuary terminals
London Gateway and the Port of Tilbury both sit on the Essex bank and are tax sites within Thames Freeport, which has brought terminal, warehouse and service infrastructure along the A13 corridor. Port pavement sits at the thick end of the range, laid for point loads from straddle carriers and gantries, so the saw, the blade and the programme are chosen for that slab rather than for an ordinary warehouse floor.
Terminals run to vessel calls rather than office hours. How much of the yard the operator will give up, and for how long, is agreed before mobilisation rather than on the day.
Choosing the method
- Floor sawing for slabs, hardstanding and carriageway, to a working maximum of 625mm in one pass.
- Wall sawing for openings in walls, decks and upstands.
- Wire sawing where a section is too thick for a blade, or vibration rules a disc out.
- Diamond drilling for penetrations, test cores and fixings.
Cutting is rarely the whole job. A cut left open lets water into the slab, and on estuary pavement that water carries salt, so the joint sealing that follows is done by the same team.
Getting to Essex
The Dartford Crossing is part of the plan for every Essex job, and start times are agreed with it in mind. The M25, M11, A12, A13 and A127 are all within range, and the A12 in particular runs on ageing concrete and bridge structures where coring for investigation, fixings and drainage is routine night-closure work. The Lower Thames Crossing, landing near East Tilbury, will add structures and highway work on the A13 and A1089 approaches for years.
