Concrete Cutting Contractors in Surrey
We cut and drill concrete across Surrey, working out from our yard near Maidstone in Kent, to a maximum depth of 420mm in concrete and asphalt alike. Surrey is not our home county, and it is worth saying so plainly. It sits within normal working range, and that shapes the work we are the right choice for as much as the work we are not.
At Shepherd and Sons we have completed more than 300 cutting and drilling projects across the UK in the past six years. From working with clients along the M25 corridor, at Heathrow and on commercial sites across the South East, we've found something consistent. The useful question is not whether a contractor covers Surrey. Almost every one of them claims to. It is what actually happens on the morning of the job.
Where Surrey's concrete actually is
The M25 crosses the county from junction 8 at Reigate to junction 14 at Heathrow. A motorway corridor means bridge decks, gantry bases, drainage runs and hardstanding as much as carriageway, and all of it is concrete work. The A3 and the M3 add two more trunk corridors through the same county.
Heathrow's southern and western boundary is the Surrey line. Spelthorne borough, taking in Staines, Ashford and Stanwell, sits directly against the airport. Gatwick lies immediately south of the county, just over the West Sussex boundary at Horley.
Away from the corridors, Surrey carries a heavy concentration of distribution units, trading estates and commercial floors. Those are industrial slabs, typically 150 to 250mm, and they are the everyday end of the work rather than the headline end.
What "within working range" honestly means
The yard is at Linton, a few minutes from Maidstone. The route into Surrey is the A20 or M20 to the M26, then anticlockwise on the M25. Outside peak that is a straightforward run. Inside peak it is not, and no contractor's website changes that.
The practical consequence is worth being direct about. We are well suited to programmed work, night possessions and planned shutdowns in Surrey. We are a poorer choice than a Woking-based firm if you need somebody on site within the hour.
In our experience, a planned programme works better than a short-notice call-out for work outside our home county. A crew leaving Kent at four in the morning beats one arriving at an hour's notice. The difference is blades matched to a known slab, rather than meeting reinforcement nobody mentioned. Distance costs you nothing on a job that was surveyed properly. It costs you a shift on one that was not.
The airfields sit on both county boundaries
Heathrow and Gatwick are both former BAA airports. We have been sole contractor for the British Airport Authority since 2008, working across all seven of them.
That matters more here than it would in most counties. Surrey's northern edge runs along Heathrow's perimeter, and its southern edge stops just short of Gatwick. So airside discipline is not an abstract credential in this part of the country. It is the standard the work either side of the county line is delivered to. It is also where the habits come from: fixed possessions, immediate handback, and a surface swept clear before it reopens.
Whose road is it, and who signs off the closure
On a Surrey highway job the first question is whose road it is. National Highways is responsible for the M25, the M3 and the trunk sections of the A3. Surrey County Council is the highway authority for most of the rest, with the boroughs adding a further layer below that.
This is not administrative trivia. It sets who issues the permit, what the possession looks like and how long you get. A trunk road closure is a formal booking with a fixed handback time and penalties behind it. A county road is usually a permit under the traffic management scheme, with more flexibility and less notice.
We've found the cost of getting this wrong is rarely the paperwork. It is a crew standing at a gate at ten at night while somebody establishes which authority signed the closure off.
Surrey also carries a high proportion of work close to housing. Permitted hours are set locally, and they vary between boroughs. Confirm them before the programme is built around them, not after.
Depth, and the point where a floor saw stops
A floor saw reaches roughly just under half its blade diameter. A 900mm blade gives 360 to 420mm, which is our working maximum, and it holds for concrete and asphalt alike.
Set that against Surrey's slabs and it covers nearly everything. Industrial floors run 150 to 250mm. Highway concrete runs 200 to 350mm. Bridge decks run 200 to 400mm. Depth is governed by blade diameter rather than by the machine's power, so a contractor quoting a bigger number is usually describing a different method.
Past 420mm, or where the shape is not a straight line, the answer is wire sawing rather than a bigger saw. Openings and penetrations are diamond drilling work. Anybody who answers every problem with the same machine is selling the machine, not the solution.
Reinforcement sets the price, not the square metre
Most cutting is quoted per linear metre, which assumes every metre is the same. Reinforcement is what breaks that assumption.
A blade cutting clean concrete and a blade cutting through a dense mat of 16mm bar are doing different jobs. They consume segments at different rates too. A heavily reinforced bay can take materially longer than plain concrete at the same depth. On older Surrey industrial floors, what is actually in the slab is often unknown until somebody scans it.
That is why a survey before the quote is worth more than a keen rate after it. A scan costs an hour. Meeting an unrecorded service costs a shift, and sometimes a machine.
What to check before appointing anyone
- Who is turning up, from where, and at what time? Ask for the yard, not the head office address.
- Is the price for cutting only, or for cutting and making the surface good afterwards?
- Where is the slurry going, and has a disposal route been agreed?
- Are operatives NVQ Level 2 in cutting and drilling, with CSCS cards and Drilling and Sawing Association competence?
- Has anybody actually surveyed the slab, or is the quote based on a description over the phone?
The first and last questions catch most of the problems. A registered office in Surrey tells you nothing about where the crew and the plant sleep. And a quote given without a survey is a quote that will change once somebody meets the reinforcement.
Cutting is also rarely the whole job. A cut left open lets water into the slab. The joint sealing that follows is part of the same operation, and we deliver both with the same team. Wet cutting brings its own controls too, since water suppression is what HSE guidance expects for silica on this work.
Surrey sits inside the wider South East region we cover from the Kent yard, alongside our work in Sussex and along the estuary. For concrete cutting anywhere in the county, get in touch with our team.
